Transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels are a large and diverse family of cation-permeable channels predominantly located on the plasma membrane of animal cells. They function as cellular sensors, responding to a wide array of physical and chemical stimuli, including temperature, pain, pressure, taste compounds, osmotic changes, and various endogenous ligands. TRP channels play crucial roles in sensory physiology—mediating sensations such as heat, cold, pain (nociception), vision, taste—and are involved in numerous physiological processes across many tissues. Mutations or dysregulation in various human TRP channel genes have been linked to diseases including hereditary neuropathies/pain syndromes and polycystic kidney disease. Their accessibility at the cell surface makes them attractive drug targets for analgesics and treatments for sensory disorders or cardiovascular diseases.
