TRPM8 is a member of the transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channel superfamily, specifically classified within the melastatin subfamily. It functions as a non-selective cation channel permeable to both monovalent and divalent ions, including Na(+) and Ca(2+). TRPM8 is best known as the primary molecular sensor for environmental cold in mammals and is also activated by cooling agents such as menthol and icilin.
