Transient Receptor Potential Mucolipin 8 (TRPM8)

Target
TRPM8
Molecular classification
Ion channel, TRP channel, Melastatin subfamily
01

Overview

TRPM8 is an ion channel that is primarily responsible for the sensation of cold temperatures and the cooling effects of compounds like menthol. It is a member of the TRP channel family and is expressed in sensory neurons, as well as in other tissues like the prostate, lungs, and bladder. Activation of TRPM8 leads to the influx of sodium and calcium ions, resulting in membrane depolarization and the generation of action potentials. TRPM8 is a drug target for conditions involving abnormal cold sensation or pain syndromes.

02

Mechanism of action

Agonists activate the channel, leading to ion influx and neuronal depolarization. Antagonists block the channel, preventing ion influx and neuronal activation.
