Target intelligence / Profile preview

Transient receptor potential vanilloid subfamily V member 1 receptor (TRPV1)

Target
TRPV1
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

TRPV1 is a non-selective cation channel primarily permeable to calcium ions. It plays a central role in detection and regulation of body temperature, sensation of scalding heat (>43°C), pain (nociception), and chemical irritants such as capsaicin (from chili peppers) or allyl isothiocyanate (from mustard/wasabi). It is involved in pain transduction, thermosensation, modulation of synaptic transmission, and regulation of inflammatory responses. TRPV1 has been implicated as a therapeutic target for pain management and neuropathies.

Mechanism of action

Activation results typically lead to cation influx (Ca2+), depolarization, neurotransmitter/neuropeptide release. Antagonists/blockers targeting TRPV1 are under investigation for analgesia without affecting normal thermoregulation.
