The translationally controlled tumor protein homolog (TCTP) in *Plasmodium falciparum* is a conserved protein with significant roles in parasite biology and host-pathogen interactions. It is homologous to mammalian TCTP, also known as histamine-releasing factor (HRF), and has been implicated in immune modulation during malaria infection. PfTCTP is secreted by the parasite into the serum of infected individuals and can stimulate histamine release from basophils and IL-8 secretion from eosinophils. It interacts directly with dihydroartemisinin, suggesting a role in the antimalarial mechanism of action of artemisinin derivatives.
Artemisinin binds covalently to PfTCTP, potentially contributing to its antimalarial activity.
