Translocase of inner mitochondrial membrane 8B pseudogene 1 (TIMM8BP1) is a pseudogene, meaning it is a genomic DNA sequence similar to a functional gene but has lost its protein-coding ability and is not known to produce a functional protein. Pseudogenes typically arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events followed by mutation and loss of function. TIMM8BP1 is homologous to genes encoding translocase proteins located in the mitochondrial inner membrane (such as TIMM8A and TIMM8B), which play roles in transporting proteins into mitochondria, but TIMM8BP1 itself does not participate in these functions and is not considered a viable drug discovery target or receptor. There may be confusion with functional genes such as TIMM8A (which encodes a mitochondrial translocase involved in protein import and is associated with deafness-dystonia-optic neuronopathy syndrome if mutated), but TIMM8BP1 is distinct and does not encode a known protein product.
