Overview
Translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane 20 (TOMM20) is a key receptor subunit of the translocase of the outer mitochondrial membrane (TOM complex), which facilitates the import of nuclear-encoded proteins into mitochondria[1][3]. TOMM20 specifically recognizes the N-terminal mitochondrial targeting sequences of precursor proteins and helps direct them to the mitochondrial matrix for further processing and function. Dysregulation or elevated expression of TOMM20 has been associated with several diseases, especially cancers such as thyroid cancer, and it is considered a crucial component for mitochondrial health and cellular energy metabolism[1][3][6].
