Target intelligence / Profile preview
Translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane 20-like protein (TOMM20L) is a predicted mitochondrial outer membrane protein and a member of the broader TOMM (translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane) family, which mediate the import of nuclear-encoded proteins into mitochondria[1][5]. TOMM20L shares homology with TOMM20, a well-characterized mitochondrial import receptor, but the specific biological role, structure, and importance of TOMM20L remain largely uncharacterized in current literature[5]. TOMM20L is predicted to bind mitochondrial targeting sequences and participate in the protein translocation machinery at the mitochondrial surface. However, unlike TOMM20, its precise existence, essentiality, and functional biology in human cells are not experimentally validated, and there is no evidence that it constitutes a therapeutic target or is involved in disease processes at the protein level[5]. It is important not to confuse TOMM20L with TOMM20, which is a well-known and characterized receptor subunit of the mitochondrial outer membrane translocase complex, critical for mitochondrial protein import and experimentally shown to interact with precursor proteins and core TOM complex proteins in humans[1][2][3][4][6]. TOMM20L currently exists as a predicted gene/protein with limited direct functional data.
Not established; no drugs are known or predicted to act through this molecule.
