The Translocator Protein 18 kDa (TSPO) is a highly conserved transmembrane protein primarily located in the outer mitochondrial membrane. It plays critical roles in cellular physiology, particularly in steroidogenic tissues and glial cells of the brain. TSPO is involved in cholesterol transport, regulation of mitochondrial functions, apoptosis, cell survival, cell proliferation, stress response, immunomodulation, and is implicated in various diseases including neurodegenerative disorders and cancers.
