Overview

Transmembrane 9 superfamily member 2 (TM9SF2) is a member of the transmembrane 9 superfamily, characterized by nine highly hydrophobic transmembrane domains and a molecular mass of roughly 76 kDa. TM9SF2 localizes to early endosomes and intracellular membranes in human cells, where it may act as a small molecule transporter or ion channel. It is involved in vesicular trafficking, cellular migration, and possibly in immune pathway regulation through formal or functional interaction with pattern recognition receptors in model organisms. TM9SF2 has been implicated as an oncogene in colorectal cancer, with elevated expression promoting cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, and anchorage-independent growth; its loss diminishes tumor fitness and correlates with a favorable clinical outcome. Although its precise biochemical function remains under investigation, TM9SF2 participates in intracellular membrane dynamics and may regulate cell adhesion and metabolic pathways connected to cancer biology.
