Transmembrane 9 superfamily member 3 (TM9SF3)

Target
TM9SF3
Molecular classification
Other (multi-pass transmembrane protein; member of the nonaspanin/transmembrane 9 superfamily)
01

Overview

Transmembrane 9 superfamily member 3 (TM9SF3) is a multi-pass transmembrane protein in the nonaspanin family, predicted to be involved in protein trafficking to and localization at cellular membranes[1][3]. It is highly expressed in several tissues and is upregulated in certain cancers, particularly scirrhous-type gastric cancer and T-cell leukemia, where it promotes cell proliferation and invasion, supporting tumor aggressiveness and making it a prognostic biomarker in these malignancies[2][4]. While not currently a direct therapeutic target, its implication in cancer biology and membrane trafficking highlights its potential relevance in oncology research and biomarker development[2].

Mechanism of action

Not established; however, microRNA-1193 suppresses its expression, reducing proliferation and invasion, which implies that TM9SF3 supports these oncogenic processes when active[2]

03

Biological functions

Protein localization to membraneRegulation of cell proliferationModulation of cell invasionTumor–stromal interaction support
04

Disease associations

Cancer (notably scirrhous-type gastric cancer, T-cell leukemia)Other (prognostic factor for tumor invasion)
05

Safety considerations

No specific safety concerns documented; as an emerging oncogenic factor, preclinical data are lacking regarding potential off-target or systemic effects if targeted therapeutically
06

Biomarkers

TM9SF3 expression serves as a prognostic biomarker in scirrhous-type gastric cancer and T-cell leukemia
