Transmembrane channel-like protein 4 (TMC4) is a voltage-gated chloride channel involved in high-concentration salt taste sensation and is predicted to enable mechanosensitive ion channel activity. It facilitates chloride influx into taste bud cells during depolarization induced by high NaCl concentration, helping restore resting potential and potentially allowing permeation of other organic anions. TMC4 is also involved in pH and temperature-dependent modulation of salty taste and has been associated with several diseases, including cholestasis and susceptibility to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease[1][4][6][8].
