Transmembrane protease serine type 2 (TMPRSS2) is a type II transmembrane serine protease that plays critical roles in both normal physiology and disease, particularly in viral infections and prostate cancer. It activates other proteins via proteolytic cleavage, facilitates entry of coronaviruses into host cells by cleaving their spike proteins, and is involved in prostate cancer development through gene fusions. It is highly expressed on epithelial surfaces including those lining airways/lungs and prostate glandular tissue.
