Overview

Transmembrane protein 144 (TMEM144) is a multi-pass membrane protein encoded by the *TMEM144* gene located on chromosome 4q32.1 in humans. Two protein isoforms exist, with the main isoform consisting of 345 amino acids (37.6 kDa). TMEM144 is predicted to function as a transmembrane transporter, likely for carbohydrates, although its precise molecular function remains unconfirmed. Expression is highest in adult brain tissue, particularly in oligodendrocytes and certain immune cells, with subcellular localization predictions including mitochondria, plasma membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosome/vacuole, or Golgi apparatus. Clinically, high TMEM144 expression is a favorable prognostic biomarker in endometrial cancer but is associated with poorer prognosis in pancreatic cancer. No drugs that target TMEM144 are currently known, nor are there established mechanisms of action for potential modulators[1][4][9][3].
