Transmembrane protein 163 (TMEM163) is a transmembrane zinc transporter protein in the cation diffusion facilitator (CDF) family, structurally related to the SLC30 (ZnT) family of mammalian zinc efflux transporters. TMEM163 binds divalent cations, primarily zinc (Zn2+) and nickel (Ni2+), and is involved in the export of zinc across cellular membranes. It is predicted to localize to the early endosome and is implicated in essential processes such as myelination, biogenesis of platelet dense granules, and modulation of P2X purinoceptors. Recent evidence suggests TMEM163 has emerging roles in human diseases including neurodegeneration, lysosomal storage disorders, and metabolic dysfunction, though it is not yet a well-established therapeutic drug target[1][2][4][6].
