Transmembrane protein 171 (TMEM171) is a protein encoded by the TMEM171 gene in humans, located on chromosome 5q13.2. The longest isoform has 324 amino acids and a molecular weight of ~44 kDa. TMEM171 is predicted to span the plasma membrane with four transmembrane domains, and undergoes several post-translational modifications including glycosylation, N-terminal acetylation, palmitoylation, phosphorylation, and O-β-GlcNAc modification. It interacts with proteins such as MIER1 (a transcriptional repressor), but its overall molecular function and mechanisms remain poorly characterized. TMEM171 exhibits moderate and tissue-differentiated expression, with clinical associations to several cancers. It is evolutionarily conserved in vertebrates, but not classified as a receptor, enzyme, ion channel, transporter, or transcription factor based on current knowledge.
