Transmembrane protein 179 is a human protein encoded by the TMEM179 gene, characterized as a 233-amino acid, hydrophobic, putative multi-pass transmembrane protein with four predicted transmembrane domains and ER localization. It is most abundantly expressed in brain and spinal cord tissues, with lower expression in adrenal gland, lung, and testis. TMEM179 shows increased expression in certain cancer cell lines, including glioma and small cell lung cancer, though its precise role in pathophysiology is unknown. The gene lacks known paralogs and has orthologs in a broad range of animals with nervous systems but not in non-animals or animals without a nervous system. No direct molecular function, disease mechanism, or protein interaction is established, though its regulation by neural development-associated transcription factors and nervous system specificity hint at a specialized but yet-to-be-elucidated role in neurobiology.
