Transmembrane protein 184A (TMEM184A) is a highly conserved integral membrane protein that acts as a heparin receptor in vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells. It is involved in the regulation of angiogenesis by modulating endothelial cell proliferation. TMEM184A mediates anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory signals in response to heparin, reducing MAPK signaling and vascular cell growth, and plays a potential role in vesicle transport, particularly in exocrine and Sertoli cells. The physiological function of TMEM184A continues to be characterized, and while it is not yet established as a direct therapeutic target in clinical practice, its essential role in angiogenesis suggests therapeutic relevance, especially in contexts of abnormal vascular proliferation.
