Overview

Transmembrane protein 190 is a protein encoded by the TMEM190 gene, which is a small membrane-spanning molecule predicted to possess transmembrane regions and a trefoil domain[1][7]. In mice, TMEM190 is highly expressed in testicular tissue and sperm, particularly localized to the inner acrosomal membrane structure. During the acrosome reaction, it partially relocates to the sperm equatorial segment, an area crucial for sperm-oocyte fusion. It forms protein complexes with other sperm proteins, but not directly with IZUMO1, which is a key receptor in gamete fusion. Gene knockout studies in mice have revealed that TMEM190 is dispensable for male fertility, and so it does not appear to be a critical reproductive target[1]. In humans, TMEM190 is described as a protein coding gene, with some predicted functions such as protein self-association and possible roles in hematopoietic cell differentiation[5][8][9]. It has not been characterized as a therapeutic target, receptor, transporter, or enzyme. Note: There is no evidence in the literature that TMEM190 is considered a therapeutic target (receptor, transporter, enzyme, etc.), nor is it associated with any drugs, clinical biomarkers, safety concerns, or well-characterized disease roles. Its potential biological roles are still largely inferred from predicted gene ontology annotations and experimental animal models[5][8][9][1], and there is no indication of incorrect assignment or nomenclature.
