Overview

Transmembrane protein 200A (TMEM200A) is a multi-pass membrane protein encoded by the TMEM200A gene on human chromosome 6. It belongs to the TMEM200 family, characterized by the protein of unknown function DUF2371 domain[1][4]. TMEM200A is expressed in various human tissues, including the brain, retina, and certain glandular and digestive tissues[6][7]. Although its exact physiological role remains unclear, TMEM200A is upregulated in several cancers, notably gastric cancer, where it is associated with poor prognosis, higher tumor stage, and changes in tumor immune cell infiltration (e.g., decrease in CD8+ T cells and increase in eosinophils)[2]. It has also been associated with adipose tissue cell proliferation and autosomal recessive deafness[3]. No direct drugs, mechanisms of drug action, or clinically actionable strategies for targeting TMEM200A have been established. As of current knowledge, its utility is largely in biomarker or prognosis research, not as a therapeutically actionable target[2][3][5][6].
