Overview

Transmembrane protein 204 (TMEM204) is a multi-pass transmembrane protein encoded by the TMEM204 gene located on chromosome 16 (also known as C16orf30). TMEM204 is classified as a claudin-like protein and is implicated in regulating cell adhesion and cellular permeability specifically at adherens junctions, influencing paracellular transport between cells. Functional studies suggest roles in lymph vessel development, smooth muscle cell differentiation, and modulation of signaling pathways important in vascular biology. Although TMEM204’s protein structure and subcellular localization have been characterized, there is limited evidence for its involvement as a therapeutic target or disease biomarker at present.
