Overview

Transmembrane protein 212 is a predicted five-transmembrane domain protein expressed at low levels in many human tissues, with somewhat higher levels in the brain, ovaries, lungs, heart, kidneys, testis, and certain brain regions such as the pons and trigeminal ganglion. The protein localizes to the plasma membrane and endoplasmic reticulum. It is predicted to play a role in neural architecture underlying the processing of human faces, with a particular single nucleotide polymorphism in the gene correlating with fusiform face area activation in brain imaging studies. TMEM212 displays orthologs across vertebrates, with a highly conserved structure and molecular weight (~21kDa). The gene is situated on human chromosome 3q26.3. TMEM212 has also been associated in genetic studies with sporadic Parkinson’s disease and, in some populations, with adiposity. No specific enzymatic or receptor function, therapeutic targeting, or interacting drug has been convincingly reported for TMEM212 to date.
