Overview

Transmembrane protein 221 (TMEM221) is a protein-coding gene in humans located on chromosome 19 that encodes a predicted single-pass transmembrane protein found in the cell membrane. While its structure suggests membrane localization, there is currently no experimental evidence supporting a defined molecular function, biological pathway, or disease mechanism. The gene has also been referred to by aliases such as Jiraiya and hTMEM221. Some analyses have listed TMEM221 in association with Wolfram syndrome 2, but this relationship is based only on computational predictions and text mining, not experimental validation. TMEM221 is not a well-established drug target, nor is it classified among major molecular families like receptors, ion channels, or enzymes.
