Transmembrane protein 238-like (TMEM238L) is a small, conserved membrane protein in humans, encoded by the TMEM238L (also known as FORCP or LINC00675) gene, located on chromosome 17. TMEM238L is predicted to have a role in apoptosis via the intrinsic pathway during endoplasmic reticulum stress and may inhibit cell proliferation, potentially influencing tumorigenicity[5][9]. Though classified as a transmembrane protein, it is not part of a well-described receptor, transporter, or enzyme family. Its gene and protein are expressed in various tissues, with higher levels in the digestive tract and variable but wide expression elsewhere[6]. Disease associations include increased expression in certain cancers and nonmalignant disease states (asthma, POEMS syndrome), and its methylation or expression may serve as a biomarker in some contexts[1].
