Overview

Transmembrane protein 252 is a human protein encoded by the TMEM252 gene located on chromosome 9. The protein is 170 amino acids in length and contains two transmembrane domains; it is predicted to be located in cellular membranes. The gene is mainly expressed in the kidney and small intestine, with additional lower levels in prostate, stomach, and several other organs. TMEM252 lacks characterized isoforms and shows evolutionary conservation in vertebrates but not invertebrates or plants. Its direct biological role is unknown, and it is not classified into major druggable protein families, such as receptors or enzymes. Preliminary research has identified TMEM252 among genes associated with poorer prognosis in triple-negative breast cancer and in gene-association studies for frontotemporal dementia and/or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, no mechanism, direct pathogenic role, or drug associations have been established to date.
