Target
TMEM256
Molecular classification
Transmembrane protein, Protein of unknown function (DUF423 family)

Overview

Transmembrane protein 256 (TMEM256) is a protein-coding gene that encodes a small, predicted transmembrane protein (approximately 11.7 kDa). It is orthologous between human and other vertebrate species and is expressed in multiple tissues, including the kidney, esophagus, male reproductive gland, nervous system, and more. Subcellular localization studies suggest it is present in the membrane, extracellular exosome, and mitochondrion, but its precise structure and function remain unknown. There is no published evidence implicating TMEM256 in major biological processes, known molecular signaling, or disease pathogenesis; its role in human health and disease requires further investigation. TMEM256 does not have experimentally validated molecular function or disease associations in current literature. TMEM256 is part of the larger transmembrane (TMEM) protein family, some members of which are involved in signaling, disease, and membrane biology. However, no functional, mechanistic, or pharmacological data are available for TMEM256 itself.
