Overview

Transmembrane protein 271 (TMEM271) is a human protein encoded by the TMEM271 gene located on chromosome 4p16.3. It is a membrane protein predicted to localize predominantly to the plasma membrane, with three transmembrane domains, and is 385 amino acids long. TMEM271 is highly expressed in several regions of the brain (notably the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, amygdala, and basal ganglia), with minimal expression in other tissues such as the adrenal gland and skin. No alternative isoforms are known. Its alpha-helical content and sequence features define it as a multi-pass transmembrane protein, but its precise function in physiology remains undefined. Although TMEM271 is found in a neuronal context and associated with glutamate signaling processes in certain cell lines (e.g., CADO-ES1, a Ewing's sarcoma cell line), there are currently no reports supporting a direct role in disease mechanisms, clinical biomarker use, or therapeutic targeting. There are no documented interacting proteins, therapeutic drugs, or known mechanism-of-action or safety data. TMEM271 is not described as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or canonical therapeutic target in the available literature. The molecule is not a known therapeutic target, nor is it established as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. No disease associations, biomarker status, or drug-interactions are reported in public scientific databases. TMEM271 should not be confused with TMEM27 (transmembrane protein 27), which is unrelated and involved in pancreatic islet physiology.
