Transmembrane protein 30B (TMEM30B)

Target
TMEM30B
Molecular classification
Transmembrane protein, Flippase complex subunit (P4-ATPase-associated), Accessory protein
01

Overview

Transmembrane protein 30B acts as an accessory beta subunit necessary for the function of P4-ATPase flippase complexes, which maintain the asymmetric distribution of aminophospholipids (like phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine) across cell membranes. TMEM30B facilitates the transport of P4-ATPase alpha subunits from the endoplasmic reticulum to the plasma membrane and is involved in processes such as protein exit from the ER, vesicle formation, and uptake of lipid signaling molecules. Its expression levels and genetic alterations are associated with specific disease states, particularly in cancer where downregulation or deletion has prognostic significance. TMEM30B is distinct from TMEM30A and localizes mainly to the endoplasmic reticulum, with both protein termini exposed to the cytoplasm. Dysfunction or aberrant expression of TMEM30B may impact phospholipid asymmetry, cellular apoptosis, and potentially contribute to the etiology and progression of certain tumors.
