Overview

Transmembrane protein 50A (TMEM50A) is an integral membrane protein encoded by the TMEM50A gene in humans, located within the RH gene locus on chromosome 1, between RHD and RHCE[3][9][10]. Its protein product contains predicted transmembrane domains and is thought to localize to membranes, including the endoplasmic reticulum[5][1]. Although biological function is not fully understood, TMEM50A is predicted to be involved in late endosome to vacuole transport via the multivesicular body sorting pathway[1][5]. The protein is part of the uncharacterized protein family UPF0220, and polymorphisms in TMEM50A may be linked to RH haplotypes, potentially influencing selective pressures for blood group gene combinations[2][3]. No well-characterized physiological ligands, biomarkers, or known drug interactions have been reported. The molecule has been referred to as "cervical cancer oncogene 9" in select contexts, but further investigation is needed to clarify any oncogenic role[2][3]. Overall, TMEM50A is not currently established as a therapeutic target or as a classical receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
