Overview

Transmembrane protein 51 (TMEM51) is a membrane protein encoded by the TMEM51 gene (also known as C1orf72) located on human chromosome 1. TMEM51 is predicted to reside in cellular membranes and is primarily implicated in general cell signaling rather than specific receptor-mediated pathways. It has been associated through genetic studies with several diseases, principally neurological (migraine, epilepsy) and retinal disorders, as well as diabetes and autoimmune diseases. While its detailed molecular function is not fully elucidated, some evidence suggests a role in modulating diacylglycerol signaling and oxidative stress responses, especially when observed in the context of gene fusions. TMEM51 itself is not currently an established therapeutic target, nor is it targeted by any known drugs. However, long non-coding RNAs transcribed from the TMEM51 locus (such as TMEM51-AS1) are being studied as potential cancer biomarkers or therapeutic oligonucleotide targets, although these findings pertain to the non-coding RNA rather than the protein itself.
