Overview

Transmembrane protein 82 (TMEM82) is a predicted multi-pass transmembrane protein encoded by the TMEM82 gene on human chromosome 1p36.21. The protein has 343 amino acids with approximately 8 predicted transmembrane domains and is highly conserved in vertebrates. TMEM82 is expressed most prominently in the kidney, liver, small intestine, stomach, and colon, particularly in specific epithelial cell types. Its expression profile and coexpression with proteins involved in lipid and xenobiotic metabolism suggest, but do not confirm, a metabolic function. No direct biochemical or pharmacological function has been experimentally demonstrated, and it is not currently considered a therapeutic target, receptor, transporter, or enzyme. Dysregulation or altered copy number at the TMEM82 locus has been associated with certain cancers (especially hepatocellular and renal cancer) and congenital urinary tract obstructions. There are no established drugs, mechanistic actions, or significant safety considerations described for this protein.
