Transmembrane protein 97 pseudogene 1 (TMEM97P1) is a human pseudogene, meaning it is a non-protein-coding genomic sequence that is homologous to the protein-coding gene transmembrane protein 97 (TMEM97), also known as the sigma-2 receptor[5]. TMEM97P1 is distinct from TMEM97 (which is a functional gene encoding the sigma-2 receptor and is an active research target)[1][3]. TMEM97P1 does not encode a functional protein, nor is there evidence of direct protein function or known pharmacology. Pseudogenes like TMEM97P1 may be transcribed into noncoding RNA, sometimes regulating their protein-coding counterparts through mechanisms such as acting as microRNA decoys or generating small interfering RNAs[2]. There is no evidence that TMEM97P1 serves as a direct therapeutic target or encodes a functional receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Its biological activity, if any, would be as a regulatory, noncoding RNA (a role that is common among pseudogenes), but specific information about TMEM97P1's regulatory functions or disease relevance is not available in current databases[4][5]. Current gene resources (GeneCards, BioGPS) identify TMEM97P1 as a pseudogene with no coding protein product[4][5].
