Overview

Transmembrane Serine Protease 2 (TMPRSS2) is a type II transmembrane serine protease that plays a critical role in viral entry and prostate cancer. It is highly expressed in epithelial tissues, including the respiratory tract and prostate. TMPRSS2 facilitates viral entry by cleaving and activating viral envelope glycoproteins, such as the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. In prostate cancer, TMPRSS2 can fuse with ETS transcription factors, leading to overexpression of oncogenic ETS factors. TMPRSS2 is a therapeutic target for antiviral drug development and a biomarker/fusion partner gene in oncology research.
