Transuranic Element Ions

Molecular classification
Inorganic ion, Cation, Actinide
01

Overview

Transuranic element ions refer to the ionic forms of chemical elements with atomic numbers greater than 92 (the atomic number of uranium). All transuranic elements are radioactive and, except for neptunium and plutonium, are synthetic. These ions are primarily relevant in the context of nuclear chemistry, nuclear waste management, and the development of specialized materials. Specific ions like plutonium-238 (Pu-238), californium-252 (Cf-252), and americium-241 (Am-241) find applications in power sources, neutron sources, and smoke detectors respectively. Their interaction with biological systems is primarily a concern due to their radiotoxicity. Research focuses on methods for selective separation and removal of these ions from nuclear waste.
