Trefoil factor 1 (TFF1) is a small secreted protein crucial for gastrointestinal mucosal protection and repair. It stabilizes the mucus layer, modulates mucus viscosity, and exhibits both antiproliferative and antiapoptotic effects. While acting as a tumor suppressor in the stomach, it can paradoxically promote tumorigenesis in other contexts. It was originally identified as an estrogen-inducible protein (pS2) in breast cancer cells.
