Treponema pallidum

Molecular classification
Bacterium, Spirochete
01

Overview

Treponema pallidum is a microaerophilic, gram-negative spirochete bacterium and the causative agent of syphilis, bejel, and yaws. It is transmitted primarily through sexual contact. The bacterium has a distinctive helical shape and relies on glycolysis for ATP production, making it an obligate parasite. Its outer membrane structure helps it evade host immune responses. Treatment is highly effective with penicillin G.
