Overview

The tricuspid valve is an anatomical valve located between the right atrium and the right ventricle of the heart[1][3][5]. It consists typically of three leaflets (anterior, posterior, septal) attached to chordae tendineae and papillary muscles[1][3][5]. Its primary function is to enable one-way flow of blood from the right atrium to the right ventricle and to prevent regurgitation during ventricular contraction[1][3][5]. Dysfunction (regurgitation, stenosis, atresia) leads to cardiovascular diseases and may require monitoring, medical management, or intervention such as surgical or transcatheter valve repair/replacement[3]. The valve is composed of a mix of cellular elements including valve interstitial cells, endothelial cells, and extracellular matrix, but is not considered a drug target in the molecular sense[2][4]. Research is ongoing into the cellular and molecular changes in tricuspid valve disease, particularly tricuspid regurgitation, but therapeutic approaches center on structural and mechanical correction rather than molecular targeting[2][3][4].
