Tricuspid valve annulus

Molecular classification
Other (anatomical structure; not a molecule, enzyme, transporter, or receptor)
01

Overview

The tricuspid valve annulus is a fibrous, saddle-shaped, non-planar ring that forms the structural base of the tricuspid valve, separating the right atrium and right ventricle. It anchors the valve leaflets and undergoes dynamic changes in size and shape during the cardiac cycle. Annular dilation is a key factor in tricuspid regurgitation, particularly in conditions such as atrial fibrillation and right atrial enlargement. The anatomical relationship of the annulus to adjacent critical structures, such as the right coronary artery and the conduction system, has important implications for surgical and interventional procedures.

Biological functions

Maintains the structure and integrity of the tricuspid valveFacilitates proper valve function by providing support for leaflet coaptationModulates the geometry and motion of the tricuspid valve during the cardiac cycle
03

Disease associations

Cardiovascular diseaseTricuspid regurgitationRight heart failureAtrial fibrillation/atrial flutter (context: involvement in cavotricuspid isthmus ablation)Congenital heart disease (e.g., Ebstein's anomaly)
04

Safety considerations

Proximity to the right coronary artery (risk of iatrogenic injury during valve or ablation procedures)Proximity to atrioventricular node/Koch’s triangle (risk of conduction system injury during surgery/ablation)Procedural challenges in tricuspid annulus due to lack of fibrous tissue and dynamic nature
05

Interacting drugs

None (the annulus is not directly targeted by drugs)
06

Biomarkers

Annular dilation by echocardiography is a biomarker for tricuspid regurgitation severity and risk stratification
