Overview

Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells 1 (TREM-1) is a receptor expressed on myeloid cells, including monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It acts as an amplifier of inflammation by promoting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines upon activation. Activation of TREM-1 synergizes with pattern recognition receptors like Toll-like receptors (TLRs) to enhance immune responses to microbial components or danger signals. A soluble form of TREM-1 (sTREM-1) is generated via proteolytic cleavage and can be detected in biological fluids, serving as a biomarker for disease severity/prognosis. TREM-1 is implicated in various inflammatory conditions and infectious diseases, including sepsis, inflammatory bowel disease, and arthritis. Blockade or inhibition of TREM-1 has shown promise as a therapeutic strategy to reduce excessive inflammation in animal models.
