Overview

Trimethylamine is a small, volatile, tertiary amine (chemical formula C₃H₉N) with a strong fishy odor, widely present as a natural byproduct of microbial and animal metabolism, and as a result of the breakdown of compounds like choline and carnitine. It is not a therapeutic "target" in the conventional drug discovery sense (e.g., a protein or nucleic acid). Biologically, trimethylamine has significance as a metabolite implicated in the genetic disorder trimethylaminuria and as a microbial product associated with metabolism of dietary nutrients in the gut, especially as a precursor to trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). It has various industrial uses and is classified as hazardous due to its toxicity and flammability.
