Overview

Trueperella pyogenes (formerly Arcanobacterium pyogenes) is a Gram-positive, non-motile, facultative anaerobic bacterium that acts as a versatile opportunistic pathogen in a wide range of domestic and wild animals (Rzewuska et al., 2019, Pathogens). It is a leading cause of pyogenic conditions such as mastitis, metritis, and liver abscesses in livestock, which results in significant economic impact on the agricultural sector (Jost & Billington, 2005, Veterinary Microbiology). The bacterium's pathogenicity is largely driven by the secretion of pyolysin (PLO), a cholesterol-dependent cytolysin that forms pores in host cell membranes, particularly targeting immune cells like macrophages and neutrophils (Baggiolini et al., 1994, Infection and Immunity). Although primarily a veterinary pathogen, it is increasingly recognized as a zoonotic threat to humans, causing infections such as endocarditis and cutaneous abscesses in individuals with close animal contact (Jarvis et al., 1997, Journal of Infection). Therapeutic intervention typically relies on beta-lactam antibiotics, tetracyclines, and macrolides, though the emergence of multi-drug resistant strains poses a challenge for clinical management (Zastempowska et al., 2012, Journal of Dairy Science).
