Overview

Trueperella pyogenes surface antigens (formerly Arcanobacterium pyogenes) represent a group of proteins and virulence factors located on the bacterial cell wall that are critical for the pathogen's ability to infect livestock (Rzewuska et al., 2016, Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica). Key antigens include fimbriae (such as FimA, FimC, FimE, and FimG), neuraminidases (NanH and NanP), and the collagen-binding protein (CbpA), which facilitate adhesion to host cells and extracellular matrix components (Jost & Billington, 2005, Veterinary Microbiology). Additionally, the cholesterol-dependent cytolysin known as pyolysin (PLO) is a major secreted and surface-associated toxin that causes host cell lysis and is a primary target for neutralizing antibodies. These antigens are the focus of development for recombinant subunit vaccines and autogenous bacterins aimed at preventing common infections like bovine mastitis, metritis, and liver abscesses. By inducing a robust immune response, these vaccines aim to neutralize the cytolytic effects of PLO and inhibit the initial stages of bacterial colonization (Zhang et al., 2017, Veterinary Microbiology).

Mechanism of action
