TTC21B antisense RNA 1 (TTC21B-AS1)

Target
TTC21B-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Antisense RNA
01

Overview

TTC21B antisense RNA 1 (TTC21B-AS1) is a human long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene located on chromosome 2, on the positive strand, in close proximity to the protein-coding gene TTC21B[1][3][7]. As an antisense RNA, it is thought to potentially regulate the expression of its sense counterpart (TTC21B), but its biological function remains largely uncharacterized[5]. TTC21B-AS1 is referenced in several genetic disease databases as being genetically associated with nephronophthisis 12 and short-rib thoracic dysplasia 4, both ciliopathies, but mechanistic or causal roles are not established[4][7]. There are no known drugs or small molecules directly targeting this lncRNA, and it is not currently considered a therapeutic target. Accordingly, TTC21B-AS1 is primarily classified as a long non-coding antisense RNA with currently limited functional annotation.

02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (no known targeted drugs or interventions)

03

Biological functions

Putative regulation of the neighboring TTC21B gene expression (by virtue of being an antisense RNA)Other (as defined for general lncRNAs; specific functions not clearly defined in the literature or databases as of current knowledge)
04

Disease associations

Associated with nephronophthisis 12 (a ciliopathy leading to kidney disease)Potential association with short-rib thoracic dysplasia 4 with or without polydactyly
05

Safety considerations

None established (no known drug targeting, limited knowledge of biological function)
06

Biomarkers

There is no established clinical biomarker use; however, its association with nephronophthisis suggests possible biomarker potential, pending further research
