Tubulin alpha is a major structural protein that, together with beta-tubulin, forms heterodimers which are the building blocks of microtubules. Microtubules are dynamic, cylindrical polymers essential for various cellular processes including maintaining cell shape, intracellular transport, and chromosome segregation during cell division. Mutations or dysregulation of tubulin genes—including those encoding alpha subunits—are implicated in several diseases, including cancer and neurological disorders. Alpha-tubulins undergo various post-translational modifications such as acetylation that regulate their function within microtubules and may influence processes like neurite outgrowth or response to injury/disease states.
