Overview

Tubulin alpha-1C chain (TUBA1C) is a protein that forms part of the microtubule cytoskeleton as a major component of the alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimer[1][4]. Microtubules are essential for cellular structure, organelle and vesicle trafficking, and force generation in cell division[2]. TUBA1C is highly conserved and plays critical roles in organizing the microtubule network, especially during mitosis and cell differentiation[1][2]. Alterations in tubulin isotype expression, including TUBA1C, have been associated with cancer development, chemotherapy resistance, and neurodevelopmental disorders[2][7]. Drugs targeting microtubules, such as taxanes and vinca alkaloids, interact with tubulin to inhibit proper microtubule function, thus blocking cell division particularly in rapidly dividing tumor cells[2]. Therapeutic targeting of tubulin is complicated by potential neurotoxicity and emergence of drug resistance related to isotype composition or mutation[2].
