Overview

Tubulin alpha 5, pseudogene (TUBA5P) is a nonfunctional genomic sequence that resembles the protein-coding tubulin alpha 5 gene, but cannot encode a functional alpha-tubulin protein due to disruptive mutations or incomplete transcriptional features. Pseudogenes like TUBA5P arise through duplication or retrotransposition events; while traditionally considered "junk DNA," some can regulate their parent genes by producing non-coding RNAs that influence gene expression, often through interactions with microRNAs or by acting as decoys. However, there is no evidence that TUBA5P has such regulatory roles, and it is not implicated as a therapeutic target, disease gene, or biomarker in clinical use.
