Overview

Tubulin alpha pseudogene 4 (TUBAP4, also known as TUBA8P2, tubulin, alpha 8 pseudogene 2) is classified as a pseudogene and not a protein-coding gene. Pseudogenes are gene sequences that resemble known genes but are generally nonfunctional due to mutations or incomplete sequences and do not produce functional proteins. TUBAP4 does not encode an active alpha-tubulin protein and therefore does not have known biological functions, roles in disease, or known interactions with drugs. It is not considered a valid therapeutic target[6]. Key context: Pseudogenes, such as TUBAP4, are not considered therapeutic targets because they do not translate into functional proteins and do not participate in cellular mechanisms the way protein-coding genes/receptors/enzymes do[6]. There are multiple tubulin alpha genes and pseudogenes in the genome, but only the protein-coding alpha-tubulins—such as TUBA4A or TUBA4B—are functionally relevant in microtubule assembly and are recognized as drug targets in cancer and other conditions[1][2][6]. TUBAP4 has no reported link to disease involvement, drug actions, or safety concerns as a molecular target. Note: There may be confusion between TUBAP4 (a pseudogene, no protein product) and functionally relevant protein-coding tubulin alpha genes such as TUBA4A or TUBA4B. Only the latter are bona fide biological targets; TUBAP4 is not. Marked as "is_incorrect: true" because TUBAP4 is not a target in the conventional sense (not an enzyme, receptor, transporter, etc.), and may be mistaken for such due to similar naming to functional tubulin genes.
