Overview
Tubulin beta (β-tubulin) is a highly conserved protein that, together with alpha-tubulin (α-tubulin), forms heterodimers which are the building blocks of microtubules. Microtubules are dynamic, hollow fibers that constitute a major component of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton and play essential roles in cellular structure, intracellular transport, and cell division. Multiple isoforms exist, with tissue-specific expression. Mutations or dysregulation can lead to neurological disorders (tubulinopathies) and cancer. It is a target for chemotherapy drugs like taxanes and vinca alkaloids.
