Overview

Tubulin beta-4A chain (TUBB4A) and Tubulin alpha-4A chain (TUBA4A) are core components of microtubules, which are cylindrical polymers central to the eukaryotic cytoskeleton[1][2][5][6][8][9]. Each microtubule filament consists of heterodimers of alpha- and beta-tubulin that polymerize to form dynamic structures crucial for maintaining cell shape, enabling intracellular transport, and facilitating cell division. Beta-tubulin 4A is highly expressed in the central nervous system and plays an essential role in neuronal structure and function[2][3]. Mutations in TUBB4A are linked to neurological disorders such as leukodystrophy and hereditary whispering dysphonia (DYT4), as well as rare hypomyelinating diseases[2][3]. Tubulin is a validated target for many anticancer drugs which disrupt microtubule dynamics, leading to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis[4]. While each protein is essential individually, "Tubulin beta chain and Tubulin alpha-4A chain" as written is not a standard single target name but refers to the heterodimer forming the microtubule unit.
