Target intelligence / Profile preview
Tubulin beta-6 chain (TUBB6) is a structural protein encoded by the TUBB6 gene and a member of the beta-tubulin family, which, together with alpha-tubulin, forms microtubules—the major component of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton[3][5]. Microtubules are essential for cellular processes including mitosis, intracellular transport, and maintenance of cell shape[5]. TUBB6 is differentially expressed in various tissues, including muscle and brain, and is upregulated in several cancers[2][1]. Recent studies identify TUBB6 as a key biomarker and potential therapeutic target in glioblastoma and other cancers because its expression correlates with poor prognosis and altered cell proliferation[1]. As part of the microtubule system, TUBB6 is an indirect target of microtubule-binding drugs commonly used in cancer therapy, though isoform-selective targeting remains unrealized[5][1]. Overexpression of TUBB6 is also implicated in muscle pathologies such as muscular dystrophy by altering microtubule organization[4].
Inhibitors/Disruptors of microtubule polymerization or depolymerization[5]. Blockade of mitosis via microtubule stabilization (taxanes) or destabilization (vinca alkaloids)[5].
